Fumie Ito Matters has been dancing since the age of 15. Graduating from dance college in Tokyo and relocating to NYC, she became interested in the interplay of movement and video, studying editing, animation, and performance. Fumie uses a mix of analog and digital techniques to translate the expression of physical movement into live projection performances.
Fumie has performed video at 23 Windows, NYU, Rosekill, Share, Synaesthesia Gallery, Theater for the New City, Uke Hut, Googleween for Kids at Google Tokyo, Illumination Festival in Niigata, Children's Center 0123 in Tokyo, Theater Banana’s Night on the Galactic Railroad, Hello Musical: family-friendly multimedia stage performance of showtunes with alumni of Shiki Theatre Company, Moon art night Shimokita, Akaboshi House (Cultural Property of Japan) and elsewhere in America and Japan. Her art has been displayed at the 15th to 18th editions of the Digital Graffiti Festival in Alys Beach, The Gdansk Light Festival in Poland, SSA Mapping in Salvador,Brazil and "Japanese Sweets Kingdom" has been awarded 1st place at the Festa das Luzes de São Chico 2025(in São Francisco do Sul, Brazil), The World Expo 2025 in Osaka, XR Festival Florence 2025 Video Immersive Show in Italy and Anthology Film Archives and Caravan Of Dreams.
Fumie was assistant animator for documentaries including Sundance-selected features, HBO, Netflix Originals and lead animator for the PBS web series “The Art Assignment”. Fumie has edited and produced promotional videos and trailers for the Jazz singer Yuko Ito, performance artist Ayakamay, Japanese drum troupe COBU and others.
フミエ イトウ マターズ
１５歳からHIPHOPダンスを始め、東京アナウンス学院ダンスパフォーマンス科を卒業し、その後ニューヨークに渡米。
動きと映像の相互作用に興味を持ち、ビデオ編集、２Dアニメーション、パフォーマンスを学ぶ。
アナログとデジタルの技法を組み合わせたプロジェクションパフォーマンスを、日本を拠点とし、海外のデジタルアートフェスティバルからも作品が選ばれている。
２０２２年帰国後からの活動
・地元新潟県糸魚川市のイルミネーションイベント「いといがわミライト」で地元との子ども達と共に、子ども達の歌声や地域の方言、そこに住む人々を活かし、言葉や歌声、子ども達の描いた絵をコラージュし、オリジナル音楽と共にプロジェクションマッピングで演出する。
・東京都武蔵野市児童館のイベントにて、冬から春にかけての空間芸術を演出。
・劇団バナナと共にGoogle Tokyoオフィスで行われている企業向け子どもイベント
「Googleween」でパフォーマンスをする。
・調布青年会議所交流会にて、劇団バナナ、minglelingoと共に、
宮沢賢治の「銀河鉄道の夜」を突入型、参加型のパフォーマンスを制作。
・ムーンアートナイト下北沢で「おかんのおと」と音楽と映像のパフォーマンス。
・「旧赤星鉄馬邸」（国の登録有形文化財に登録されている）にて、
秋とハロウィンの作品をプロジェクションマッピングで演出。
・長野県飯山市立常盤小学校閉校記念イベントと「小樽雪あかりの路」にて、
劇団バナナと共に「手ぶくろをかいに」を公演
・Thankful project：元劇団四季の俳優達と音楽劇「ハロー！ミュージカル！」
親子で楽しめる体験型ステージ！を北沢タウンホールで公演。
編集者としては、Sundance映画祭のセレクト作品、HBO、 Netflixオリジナルのドキュメンタリー映画のアシスタントアニメーター、PBS web シリーズ（アメリカのNHK）“The Art Assignment” ではリードアニメーターとしての経験も持つ。
